Although I use an electric kiln for the first biscuit firing of my work, I prefer to use flames for the glaze firing. The glaze effects I’m looking for only come about through a process known as reduction. This is when the level of oxygen in the kiln is reduced to the point where the flame takes oxygen from the clay and glaze materials to keep burning. The Copper Red glaze only becomes red through the reduction of the Copper Carbonate in the glaze to Copper, changing the colour from pale turquoise to deep red. True Alchemy!
